TiVo gives you a choice of service payment options: no monthly fees or pay as you go. You decide. Will TiVo work with my TV setup?
The TiVo Service begins with a brief, nightly local phone call to get the up-to-date TV program information it needs to function. Next, the TiVo service works with the nightly television data to identify and record shows that you have specifically asked for and other shows that may be of interest to you. In this way, TiVo is always full of programs you'll want to watch whenever you turn on your TV. The same phone line, by the way, also enables TiVo to upgrade your system's functionality with the latest features and information when they become available. Automatically.

Does TiVo know what I'm watching?
Absolutely not. The TiVo service does not monitor what you are watching. The information required for personalization is contained within the recorder in your home and is based only on your viewing preferences as registered by your choices with the Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down buttons. Unlike personalized Internet services, TiVo does not require any information to be sent back to its Broadcast Center. What Does Lifetime Subscription Mean?
A Lifetime Subscription to the TiVo Service entails:

  • Applies to the lifetime of the recorder (not of the subscriber). Remains in effect after storage capacity upgrades by the manufacturer or an authorized vendor.
  • Remains in effect when the recorder is repaired or replaced during service by the manufacturer or an authorized vendor.
  • Accompanies the recorder in case of ownership transfer.
  • Cannot be transferred to a recorder from a different manufacturer or to a recorder with a different model number.
  • Each recorder purchased requires its own service subscription.



How does TiVo know what programs I'll like?
With the unique Thumbs Up™ and Thumbs Down™ buttons on the TiVo remote, you can rate your favorite shows, telling TiVo which ones you like and which ones you don't. These preferences are saved locally on your recorder; once the TV program data reaches your recorder, the TiVo Service then matches the preferences with the data to make recommendations uniquely suited for you. The more you use it, the better the TiVo Service gets! TiVo keeps a list of suggested programs under TiVo's Suggestions and, ™if space is available, automatically records suggestions so that the recorder is always full of shows you like.

Does TiVo allow me to skip or automatically remove commercials?
The TiVo remote control has a three-speed fast forward button that enables you to skim through anything on your TV screen. This includes our unique Smart Scan feature that compensates for your reaction time when fast-forwarding and ensures that you won't overshoot the spot where you resume your program.


Does the TiVo Service include program listings for my area?
The TiVo Service includes complete listings for over 13,000 cable systems, DIRECTV® , Dish-Echostar, and terrestrial broadcast TV systems in the U.S.

How many days of future program listings does TiVo contain?
The TiVo Service provides up to 13 days of television program scheduling.



Can TiVo record from Pay-Per-View Channels?
Yes. TiVo allows you to tune to and automatically record from Pay-Per-View channels. You need to manually authorize the purchase with your cable or satellite company as you would do normally to view it.

Can I record two shows that are in the same timeslot?
TiVo's service automatically warns you of conflicting recordings and helps you resolve them. In fact, TiVo has developed a truly advanced scheduling system that maximizes the amount of programming you can record. That way, all of your storage capacity is always in use and there's always something you'll like to watch when you turn on your TV.

How  long are programs kept once recorded?
TiVo will keep recording shows until the recorder is full. The service will then delete suggested shows first, followed by the oldest shows you have specifically requested to make room for more recent events. You can select particular shows to be kept until you choose to delete them, or you can save copies onto your VCR.

How long can I pause live TV?
The recorder records up to 30 minutes of a show while you're watching live TV, but you can always select the entire program to be recorded if more time is needed.



How many shows can the recorder save?
Up to 30 hours, dependent upon your choice of recorder model and settings.

Why do I need a phone connection?
The recorder requires the use of a phone connection to receive daily programming information and the software it needs to operate the service. It also enables TiVo to upgrade your system's functionality with the latest features and information as they become available. These daily phone calls last less than five minutes and happen at times your phone is unlikely to be in use–usually at night.

Will it tie up my phone line?
Your phone will always be available for personal use–simply pick it up and TiVo will hang up and make its call later. Or, if you are using your phone when TiVo tries to make its call, it will try again later.

How long does it take to download programming information and other content?
For the very first call to activate the TiVo Service, the recorder makes a toll-free call that lasts 10-20 minutes, depending on the number of channels you receive. It takes 1-2 hours to process that information and complete the Guided Setup. After the initial activation, the daily local call takes only a few minutes. The recorder calls during non-peak hours–usually late at night. These calls will not interfere with call waiting, incoming, or outgoing calls.

Can I save my favorite recordings onto my VCR?
In accordance with consumer electronics guidelines, the recorder provides analog audio/video outputs that are designed to work with a VCR.



How does the TiVo Service stay up-to-date?
Automatically. We deliver new services to you over time through your phone line. Your TiVo will always be up to date with the latest features and content.

What is warranty on the recorder?
Warranties vary by manufacturer. Please check with the manufacturer of your recorder.

What if I buy a recorder from a private party?
Hardware warranties are not transferable, but the Lifetime Service on the TiVo recorder is transferrable. However, if the party from which you've purchased your recorder had a monthly or annual subscription, you can contact TiVo Customer Care to sign up for the TiVo Service.

What if I move?
No problem. The recorder and the service work all over the United States. First, call the TiVo Customer Care center at 877-FOR-TIVO and let us know. We will update your billing information so that your TiVo Service will continue without interruption. Once you move to your new location, hook up the recorder and go through the Guided Setup. Follow the instructions, updating your new zip code, local phone dial-in number, and TV program provider information.

Is the TiVo service available internationally?
Outside the United States, the TiVo service will be available in the U.K. this fall.
