Product of the Year
The PTV 100 Personal TV Receiver, a joint effort of Philips Electronics, which makes the hardware, and TiVo, which designs the software, firmware, and service content, was selected as the overall etown.com 1999 Product of the Year. The device was chosen from among more than 2,000 products by a panel of etown.com expert consumer electronics reviewers based on several criteria including ground-breaking technology, superior performance, and overall value."

As far as the overall Product of the Year winner is concerned, we, the editors of etown.com, agree with Cliff Roth, who noted in his review of TiVo ...that it was "one of the most amazing new products I've seen in my 20 years of reviewing video equipment."

"TiVo is a fantastic tool for the here and now that actually delivers on the promise of giving you control over what and when you watch," Roth wrote. "It's a promise that dates back a quarter of a century to the hype of the original VCR. But now it's for real."

Couch Potato's Best Friend

I Want My TiVo
"TiVo rocks! I've been testing it for a few weeks and can't imagine living without it. The concept is simple, but the way you watch television will change profoundly.

The remote control is moderately sized with easy-to-read, color-coded buttons.

The text manual is thorough, but the menu screens are intuitive enough to preclude its necessity.

I love TiVo. It is a great innovation that is well thought out. TiVo is also going to be a key piece in the next evolution of television.

That's the best thing about TiVo -- TV adjusts to your schedule, instead of you adjusting to your TV's.

The other great thing about TiVo is that it is fairly affordable, especially compared with its competitor."

Philips TiVo PTV 100 Personal Video Server
Constantly improving, this video server evolves into a winner
.
"...clearly superior to [competition] in video quality in an A/B test. I noticed better clarity and detail with TiVo...

Ergonomically, [the TiVo remote] felt good in my hand and had nice big buttons. I wish more remotes were this good.

I'm rapidly finding a warm spot in my heart for TiVo. ... combined with the lower price, it's hard to argue that TiVo's not a better value. ...the guys from [competition] will be hard-pressed to keep up."

Test Reports - Philips TiVo Personal TV
"TiVo is a leader in what is potentially one of the most transforming product categories to reach consumers in several years.

The audio was very good...

Thumbs up for TiVo."

Viewing May Take a Revolutionary Turn
"Most hot new companies insist their product is going to change the world, but two California start-ups promising to revolutionize the way people watch television are beginning to attract a lot of believers.

Bernoff of Forrester Research predicts DVRs will be the fastest-growing consumer electronics product in history, with four out of five homes having one within 10 years. The impact on TV will be enormous, he says. ''Primetime'' could become increasingly irrelevant as more shows get recorded for later viewing, while middle-of-the-night time slots could become hot properties in an environment where time-delay TV is the norm."

Are you ready for a 'Personal TV System'?
"TiVo is supposed to give consumers complete control over their television viewing experience -- allowing them to watch what they want ... when they want it. I can report that TiVo does just that!

...check out TiVo. It's very, very, very cool and might be just what you're looking for.

If you spend a lot of time in front of the tube and want absolute control of what you want to watch and when, then TiVo is absolutely worth it for you.

Smart box!

When it came to the commercial break, I fast-forwarded TiVo and caught up with the broadcast in real time. That's very cool!

Setting TiVo up was easy.

Once you try it, you'll be hooked."

Play It Again
"Call him TiVo , the television genie. By whatever name, he makes all of us, the couch potatoes and the no-time-for-TV crowd, take a brand-new look at the medium and its entertainment potential.

You're richer for it.

For me, one of the most engaging features was the ease in ordering TiVo to "record" programs in the future, without reference to code numbers. You simply type "ER" or "Law and Order" or "Heat of the Night," and the machine automatically pops up a list of the upcoming showings of the programs, including new presentations, reruns or whatever.

It IS a genie."

Beyond the Hype: What It's Really Like to Use TiVo and Replay
"Right away, TiVo's remote gives you an idea of what the whole TiVo interface is going to be like: colorful, flashy, and stylized

One nice feature of TiVo is the intelligent fast-forward this feature works great, and is fast becoming one of my favorite things about TiVo.

So which one wins?I would have to say TiVo wins."

The Carmel Group
"TiVo's cutting-edge technology, marketing ability and strategic partners are going to forever help transform the TV viewing lifestyle of consumers. By 2005, The Carmel Group projects the Personal TV market will yield more than 10 million subscribers, which translates into about an 83% compounded annual growth rate from 1999."

Don't Kill It After All
"I've been using TiVo the last two weeks, and I'm completely blown away by the picture quality, ease and power of use, and, mainly, by the realization that I've needed this device all my life....

In 15 years of video testing, I've never been satisfied with the video quality of any consumer recording device until now. TiVo's digital video (and stereo audio) recording outperforms any analog VCR that's ever been offered to consumers. My tests showed that TiVo offers full broadcast-quality resolution, with absolutely none of the color bleeding and banding, wiggling, smeariness and video noise that mar even the best Super VHS recorder's quality....

At the highest quality, the picture is virtually flawless....

TiVo's one-handed, peanut-shaped remote has been designed with all curved surfaces and buttons of many different shapes and sizes, making it very easy to operate....

With TiVo I can pause, forward and reverse scan at 3X, 18X or 60X (much faster than a VCR fast-forward scan), access slow motion, frame-by-frame, instant replay and skip-to-live."

Must-See TiVo: NBC Buys In
"For us there was an element of, 'Let's get in with TiVo now,'" says Murphy [of NBC]. "Just because financially, we think they'll be a good company to be invested in."

NBC: No Commercials, No Problem
"In fact, by 2004, 14 million TV viewers will be using personal video recorders, an analyst for Forrester Research says.

Tom Rogers, who heads up NBC's interests in still being viable when television "converges" into a digitally based interactive medium, just bet millions that that's true."

Forbes- June 09, 1999

NBC buys stake in TiVo TV
"This is a huge statement on NBC's part," says Larry Gerbrandt, senior analyst with the media research firm Paul Kagan and Associates. "It says they want to be in on digital video recording technology from day one to help shape the direction it takes and participate in the upside." And as well they should, he adds, "because as these devices become more prevalent they will fundamentally change the way we use TV."

For NBC this is a key strategic partnership, letting it participate in a critical shift in how TV will be viewed in the near future. "As people have more control over what, how and when they watch, TiVo becomes an important navigation play for the medium," says Peg Murphy, vice president of Business Development for NBC Interactive.
